Magic Carpet Dancing

The Dancer You Are is Waiting to Happen…

Magic Carpet DancingThis is a monthly gathering of dancers to be, closet dancers, aspiring dancers, dance dreamers, dance shy, dance lovers and dance seekers.

One evening monthly, for 10 months, we will enter into the spirit, rhythms and steps of some of the most vibrant Southern Italian beautiful traditional dances and let their glowing, warming fire open the way to discovering our very own dance, awakening our joy, to feeling alive.

We will take inspiration from the dances’ steps and playful forms and learn how to follow the creative signals that can lead our bodies into their own expression, their own steps and beauty and free our vital force.

We will all find our very own ‘dancer’, for ourselves and to share and weave with others as community creation.

Wide open to all genders and any age from 16 to 116!

Start Monday 20th October at 19.00

3rd Monday evening of the month thereafter

In the beautiful premises and surroundings of

The Birchcliffe Centre, Birchcliffe Road, Hebden Bridge, HX7 8DG

REGISTRATION IS NECESSARY to join, the group will be limited to 16 members!

PONTEFRACT PERCUSSION GROUP!

The group class will run for 5 weeks, one evening per week, starting Thursday 24th May, 7.00 – 9.00.

At the end of the course, after a week gap, the group will have the chance to perform a show in public and ‘infect’ others to the rhythm and excitement we will all bring! We will agree date and  location during the course.

Fees:  £10 per night.

Course Program:

In our group/ classes we will learn about:

Samba Reggae

The Samba Reggae music movement from Brazil started in 1970 in Salvador and is still going very strong to this day. The rhythm comes from Africa. Samba Reggae is more laid back then the Samba from Rio de Janeiro. References for Samba Reggae groups in Brazil: Timbalada, Olodum, Ile Aye.

Ijexa

Ijexa is a rhythm from Bahia, an easy combination of the word AFOXE that means Festa (Party). At parties the most common rhythm is Ijexa. The rhythm is very popular in much music composed for carnival.

Baiao

Is the principal rhythm for the music played in Sao Joao.  The Baiao music is played with 4 instruments e.g.: Sanfona (Accordion) Zabumba (A Flat drum played with a mallet and thin stick).  The term FORRO is given to the situation as the word FORRO comes from FOR ALL, music for EVERYBODY.

Funk

This is a music genre that originated in the mid-late 1960s when African American musicians created soul music. In Brazil we play the rhythm only using percussion. Some people in Brazil also play music called Funk de Lata. This means ‘Play Funk in Tins and Cans’ or anything they could find in the streets and skips.

TUTOR:

Claudio Kron do Brazil is a Musician, Percussionist, Poet and Composer from Bahia, based in UK since 1996. He has devoted his life to the Afro-Brazilian indigenous culture and tradition. As a percussionist, Claudio has traveled the world, both performing and teaching: UK, New Zealand, Trinidad and Tobago, Ghana, Korea, using organic instruments and percussion such as Congas, Berimbau, Atabaque, Pandeiro, Djembe, to name a few.  Claudio’s performances have included Commonwealth Games, Brits Awards, Barbican Centre, Notting Hill Carnival, Leeds Carnival, Huddersfield Carnival, Barnsely Civic Centre and Halifax Square Chapel.
